About
Speaker: Alexis Vrignon, lecturer in contemporary history at the University of Orléans, specializing in the study of environmental conflicts in mainland France and the French overseas territories.
193 nuclear tests were carried out in Polynesia between 1966 and 1996. This French military program, unprecedented in its duration and scope, had an enormous impact on the territory, its inhabitants and its environment. This talk will look at the history of the bomb in the Pacific from the point of view of both the authorities and the Polynesians, and provide keys to understanding its continuing importance in Polynesia today.
